All-Season Runner: Lisa Sun

All-Season Runner: Lisa Sun

This series talks to inspiring All-Season Runners from around the world.
What's an All-Season Runner? That's what we call runners who don't let the wet, cold, wind or heat stop them from hitting their strides.

Here, we catch up with Lisa Sun from Toronto, Canada.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I was never athletic growing up. I started running because someone said I couldn't -- so I signed up for a half marathon to prove them wrong! I completed it without proper training and vowed never to run another. Fast forward 13 years later I stepped out of my comfort zone and joined a local run club but I informed the club leader that A, I don't run far and B, I only run in good weather. But joining that run club was a game changer! Not only did I become an all-season runner but I've also completed five half marathons and four full marathons since then.

What motivates you?
I'm a shy person but running has brought out the best of me within a community. I'm surrounded by so many runners who inspire me, keep me accountable and make running enjoyable. Running is also a part of my self care routine, and I've come to enjoy exploring new places on foot.

And what pushes you to get outdoors in any type of weather?
I enjoy the different seasons of running, the soft snow under my feet in winter, the beautiful foliage in fall, the colourful flowers in the spring time and getting to wear tank tops and shorts in summer!

What do you feel has been your greatest achievement as a runner?
Running a marathon was never on my bucket list so to have run four is quite something. I've also completed the Disney Dopey challenge which is 78 km over 4 days.

Which races stand out as some favorites, and some challenging ones?
My favorite race is Scotiabank Waterfront Marathon which was also my very first marathon. I also enjoy the small community races put on by the Beaches Running Series and Disney Dopey Challenge was a blast!
As for challenging races, I did a 25 km ultra trail run with lots of elevation just outside of San Francisco in non stop rain with very little sleep.

Are you training for any upcoming races?
I'm training for Ottawa marathon which is now a virtual race, and the Chicago Marathon which will be my first world major marathon.
I'm also doing the Great Virtual Race Across Tennessee with 19,000 other runners from all over the world!

How has COVID-19 changed your outdoor lifestyle?
Many of the races I was training for were cancelled or have gone virtual but I have still been keeping active.
I now work from home which means I have more time & flexibility to run so I've gone from running 4 times a week to 6-7 times a week! I was also used to running with others so I've had to adapt to running solo. It hasn't been too bad as I've been listening to podcasts & finding awesome art all over the city!

What advice do you have for someone who wants to start running?
Start small and increase mileage each time. Find someone or a group to run with for added accountability and you might even make a friend! I have met so many great people through running and the running community is simply awesome.
